Holiday Summary

Italy provides some of the most iconic and challenging mountains you can climb on a bike. The Passo dello Stelvio, Passo dello Gavia and the epic Passo dello Mortirolo are the stuff of legends often featuring in the Giro d’Italia. You’ll have earned a lot of respect conquering these peaks during this challenging 7 night road cycling holiday. You’ll overcome these and other challenges during the tour whilst also having the opportunity of joining a small club of riders that have climbed Stelvio from all 3 sides in one day if you choose.

The hotel has been in the same family since it first opened its doors several generations ago and the staff really go out of their way to look after us cyclists. At the end of a day on the bike relax in the comfortable lounge and bar with a cold beer or glass of wine or take a massage ahead of the following days ride.

This is a challenging but very rewarding week of cycling surrounded by some of the finest views in the Italian Alps.

Day 1

Distance & Climbing : 102KM / 3150 meters

You’re here to climb and enjoy the stunning scenery and day 1 certainly gets the week off to a flying start. Departing the hotel you’ll first head to Switzerland via the Passo Umbrail with its summit at 2501 meters before returning to Bormio via the classic route of the Stelvio, truly spectacular.

Cycle Stelvio during our 7 night Holiday - Day 1 Stelvio

Day 2

Distance & Climbing : 130KM / 2700 meters

The first 40km of today’s ride is a gentle descent providing an opportunity to freshen the legs up and take in the views ahead of the first climb of the day, the 25km climb to Passo Forcola di Livigno at 2315 meters and on to the Passo Foscagno at 2291 meters. The day ends with a descent back to Bormio. A challenging day for sure.

Cycle Stelvio during our 7 night Holiday - Day 2 Livigno loop

Day 3

Distance & Climbing : 84KM / 2500 meters

Don’t be deceived by the shorter distance, staying closer to Bormio today we first head to Passo di Gavia from the Bormio side before heading to a truly amazing climb up to the lakes at Cancano on a road whos predominant feature is hairpins and lots of them (image below). You’ll loop back around to Bormio and if you have the legs for it there’s always the climb to Bormio 2000 at the end of the day.

The lake at Cancano

Day 4

Recovery Day

Today is all about recovery which can either be taken as total rest and an opportunity to explore Bormio or you can head out for a short ride (Bormio 2000 is normally a good choice) or one of several walks. Bormio has two excellent spas one of which dates back to 1AD and this can make and excellent start to recovery day. Massages can also be arranged at the hotel and there are some great cafes and spots for lunch in the old town and we’ll recommend some favourites the evening before to help plan the day. If there’s anything you’d like to chat about re your cycling today’s also the day to put our coaching and bike fit skills to work.

A perfect place for recovery in Bormio

Day 5

Distance & Climbing : 115KM / 3200 meters

The main challenges of the day are the Mortirolo and Passo di Gavia both of which provide a very different challenge. Up first is the legendary Mortirolo with its long pitches of 16 to 18% in gradient, just when you think it’s going to give you a break it kicks up again and again past the Pantani memorial at bend 11 of 39 and on to the lung busting summit at 1851 meters. After lunch the Passo di Gavia awaits, a truly epic road with stunning glacial and lake views never to be forgotten. We believe this is one of our most spectacular and challenging rides anywhere.

No Stelvio today but Gavia and Mortirolo feature

Day 6

Distance & Climbing : Max 128KM / 4700 meters

Today is a day with various options on the Stelvio climb. You can climb Stelvio once, twice or from all 3 directions if you’d like a very special challenge. The choice is yours.

Cycle Stelvio from all 3 sides today

Attention to detail. That, in three words, summarises my first experience with Col Conquerors. Routes, accommodation, backup – Rob and Karen put a great deal of effort into putting their trips together, leaving us riders nothing to do but ride and enjoy. Honestly, nothing is too much trouble for them. Graeme S

As usual you and Karen had the logistics organised perfectly. When you say that we ride and you do the rest it really is true! The hotel was great – stunning bike facilities (wish I had all that kit at home), friendly staff, comfy rooms and great food. The group were really fun and the range of fitness was easily accommodated. The rides were tough, as you’d expect in the mountains, but the toughest day (Mortirolo & Gavia) was also the most enjoyable. This was my third trip with ColConquerors and I hope to be back for a fourth next year! Thank you both for a great week! Dominic C

Just returned from my first ever organised cycling trip, wish I had done something like this years ago.
Having the opportunity to climb the Mortirolo, Stelvio and Gavia Pass, I couldn’t have done this without the support.
Everything about this trip was so well organised. Can’t thank the Colconquerors team enough for a truly amazing week. Nick S

We’ve just returned home from a really great week in the Italian Alps on the Ultimate Italy trip. As ever, Rob, Karen and Simon went out of their way to make the holiday really special with superb levels of support, fantastic organisation, great routes and a mountain of knowledge. The climbs are fairly long and at times pretty steep, so there’s a good amount of challenging riding – but the support van is there if you need it at any point. The amazing scenery can’t fail but bring a smile to your face whatever the gradient. We stayed in a great hotel with excellent healthy food in generous quantities, an amazing bike room and cheap washing facilities for all of your kit. All in all, we’d highly recommend the trip and would like to go back – and we’ll definitely be booking another Col Conquerors trip – Kate McPherson

Competent, personal and expert.

Competent – both my wife and I value well organised tour guides, with very clear, accurate and unambiguous communication, whilst being flexible to the group needs.

Karen and Rob do this brilliantly, from the detailed gpx and visual route information, to the excellent choice of hotels.

Rob and Karen keep the groups small and quickly understand what you are looking for in a cycling holiday and trying to achieve. They discuss things in a way that is best for you individually.

As usual the group we were on climbed at very different speeds, which can cause logistical problems to provide good service to all cyclists. With 2 expert cycling guides and a van, from the evening meal conversation it was clear all members of our group felt extremely well looked after.

Rob provided me and Kate with excellent advice on nutrition, bike set up, riding styles and training. As a couple who are very keen cyclists and have been on training camps before as well as reading the latest research, Rob’s expertise was fully up to date, and we learnt many new thing every day, that we will keep with us.

We will be booking with them again next year – James M

Where to begin ??

Firstly, enormous thanks to Rob, Karen and Mike – a brilliant and passionate team. Your relaxed but professional approach to cycle touring provides the perfect blend regardless of ability.

The choice of a lovely family-run hotel in Bormio and the planning that had gone into the week was evident throughout. The insight, encouragement and support added to the enjoyment and without question got the best out of my performance on the road.

Having watched the Giro for many years and read about Italy’s most notorious climbs which are steeped in history and part of cycling folklore, nothing quite prepares you for the real thing.

Punishing, brutal, unrelenting but spectacularly beautiful. Hugely challenging to ride but ultimately thrilling and satisfying in ways that are difficult to describe – quite simply it is an absolute must for any cycling enthusiast to visit the Stelvio region, and Col Conquerers are without question the only choice of company to travel with.

More than 400km and over 30,000ft of climbing over five days riding, which included the Mortirolo, Gavia, Umbrail, Stelvio, Livingo, Lago Di Cancano and miles of achingly beautiful scenery – cycling heaven!

I cannot wait to return with my bike to the Alps and won’t hesitate to contact Col Conquerers as soon as I have earned some more brownie points from my wife !!!

Thank you for an amazing week – James Murray

Thank you to Colconquerors for an amazing week in Italy. A very well organised week from the excellent hotel, transfers to and from the airport, all the advice (technique, nutrition and pacing), fixing mechanicals (and the odd physical), support vehicle turning up exactly when I needed it and the relaxed atmosphere created throughout the entire week. Thanks also for creating a thoroughly challenging week from Mortirolo, Gavia, Umbrail, Cancano, Bormio 2000, Livigno, Passo Foscagno and the truly amazing Stelvio… I know there will be another event for me with Colconquerors, so until then, THANK YOUVinod Patel

The three magical climbs of the Passo Stelvio, The Mortirolo and the Passo Gavia were ridden over a week of truly magnificent cycling, supported by Colconquers wonderful staff. This was a true life experience. Based in Bormio, in an excellent family hotel, the support and guidance from Rob (a level three Cycling Coach), Karen (Rob’s wife and life coach) and Mike (assistant to Rob and wonderful cyclist) made the very special week. It is a absolute must for any passionate cyclist whom wants to re-live the excitement and glamour of the Giro d’Italia. For many years I had been an avid fan of the Tour de France, however having spent time in Italy with Colconquers I will follow the Giro d’Italia with true passion. A bucket list experience! Thank you once again to Colconquers. Hope to see you all again soon. – Adrian Lott

Thanks to yourself, Karen and Mike for a brilliantly organised trip – descending off the Stelvio down to Bormio cannot be beaten! – Ross McArthur

Thanks Rob, Karen and Mike for an amazing Italian week in Bormio. Whilst the weather was colder and snowier than the norm for this time of year, Rob’s meticulous preparation and local knowledge kept us riding safely and enabled us to completed almost all the rides we had wanted to do. He is also an absolute font of knowledge and really happy to offer help and advice on all sorts of things, such as training, nutrition, bike fitting, and descending skills. The hotel was superb – excellent food, bike storage (with more tools than I knew what to do with!) and friendly staff. – Chris Godfree

The Ultimate Italy trip was a fantastic week. Cycling up the Gavia and Stelvio from Bormio gave everyone two great days on the bike. The hotel was perfectly set up for cycling and the hotel staff were outstanding. The support from Rob and his team on the road and in preparing for each ride was excellent. – Andrew C
